Barry County Economic Success Summit
A panel discussion focusing on case studies of impactful housing development strategies in Ottawa County highlights the event. We will hear directly from key stakeholders and folks 'moving the needle' when it comes to housing development in that community, including Patrick Moran, CEO of Ottawa County United Way; Ryan Kilpatrick, Executive Director of Ottawa HousingNext; Angela Huesman, COO at Lakeshore Advantage; and, Paul Sachs, Director of Ottawa County Planning Department.
The 2019 Economic Forecast will be presented by Jim Robey, the Director of Regional Development at the Upjohn Institute for Employment Research.
Barry County Economic Development Alliance staff will present brief snapshots of current and upcoming activities of the EDA, including business retention & expansion, capacity-building throughout the county and workforce development.

About Our Speakers:
Jim Robey, PH.D.: Jim’s research and technical assistance on economic issues and in economic and workforce development has assisted corporate, nonprofit, and economic and workforce development entities in problem resolution and strategic decision making, from the local to the national levels. Spanning more than three decades, his expertise includes industry studies, applied occupational analysis economic impact modeling and analysis, economic and workforce development research and analysis, and site selection assistance. Prior to joining Upjohn, Jim was an Associate Vice-President with Southwest Michigan First in Kalamazoo, where he directed local economic development efforts in Marshall.
Patrick Moran: Patrick has served the last 12 years as president of the United Way of Ottawa and Allegan County. He spent 11 years prior to that at the YMCA in Grand Haven, including 4 years as CEO. In his spare time he spent 15 years as a State Staff Instructional Coach for Michigan State Youth Soccer Association, educating coaches and coaching in the Michigan Olympic Development program. Patrick is married with 2 adult children and has lived in Grand Haven since 1995.
Ryan Kilpatrick: Ryan comes from a background in economic development and city planning and he
provides strategic direction to the HousingNEXT Council, advocating for greater housing choice and affordability across the region. Kilpatrick has an extensive background in community planning, development finance, and public engagement. He previously worked for the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and is a certified planner and economic development finance professional. In his current position, he focuses on both workforce housing solutions and market-driven solutions to make workforce housing affordable for all in the greater Ottawa County region.
Angela Huesman: Angela is COO of Lakeshore Advantage, and leads the Business Solutions, Talent Solutions, and SURGE Team efforts, as well as oversees all operations and initiatives that help the companies she serves grow and thrive. Prior to joining Lakeshore Advantage, Angela spent 10 years at Coldwell Banker as the Director of Corporate Relocation Services. She led the team and initiatives that supported local companies working to attract and retain talent. She has also assisted local companies with relocation policy and programs, helping to settle those new to the area. Angela has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Baker College, is a member of the National Business Incubation Association, and is a graduate of Leadership Holland. She also serves on the workforce development board of directors for West Michigan Works!, is an advisory board member of Hello West Michigan, and serves on the leadership team for Discover Manufacturing.
Paul Sachs: As Director of Planning and Performance Improvement for Ottawa County, MI, Paul is responsible for implementing innovative, pragmatic solutions that positively impact quality of life and economic growth in the County. Paul is a passionate, creative-thinker who thrives on building effective relationships where the talents and energies of individuals are united to achieve necessary results. A Michigan native, Paul was born and raised in Royal Oak, MI, attended Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo (B.S. Earth Sciences ’98), and currently lives in Holland, MI with his wife Lisa, and two daughters (Helen – 11, and Ruby – 6). Paul previously worked as a Researcher for the Federal Highway Administration’s Research and Technology Center in McLean, Virginia, and as a Planning Analyst for Michael Baker Engineering under contract with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in Washington D.C.
