Offered in partnership with the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), the Essentials of Human Resource Management course provides an overview of the human resource function. Knowing the basics of HR can make you a better manager, improve workplace morale and employee performance, and protect your organization from needless litigation.
Program Facilitator: Roxanne Buhl, MBA, SPHR, SHRM-SCP
Roxanne holds several senior HR certifications and has more than 20 years of consultative business development, marketing, talent management, and project management experience with non-profit, private, and publicly-traded organizations. She is Director of Community Engagement for Western Michigan University’s Extended University Programs. Roxanne identifies strategic community partners and initiates, builds, and deepens lasting and reciprocal connections and relationships. Roxanne has been a facilitator for the SHRM Certification Exam Prep program at IPEx for the past three years.
Human resource issues impact every company in some way. That's why it's so important to understand the fundamental issues surrounding HR today. Whether you are new to HR or if HR is one of many roles you fulfill at your copany, this program covers the key HR topics you need to know.
Module 1: Human Resource Management-define human resource management; explain the roles and responsibilities of human resource professionals; and, explain and strengthen the alignment between strategic planning and HR planning
Module 2: Employment Law- Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964; Age Discrimination in Employment Act; Americans with Disabilities Act; Civil Rights Act of 1991; Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act; Fair Labor Standards Ace & Equal Pay Act; Family and Medical Leave Act; Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act; Drug-Free Workplace Act; Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act; Occupational Safety & Health Act; Explain the role of the EEOC; and, Describe the purpose of affirmative action
Module 3: Recruitment & Selection-Evaluate recruiting methods and their effectiveness; analyze and evaluate job applicants; recognize biases in the interview process and how to eliminate them; and, explain the selection process and identify key selection tools
Module 4: Compensation and Benefits-Explain the basic elements of a total compensation system; understand the role of base pay, incentives, and differentials in employee compensation; explain the four key steps of the compensation system design process; and, provide an overview of benefits commonly offered by the employer
Module 5: Employee Development-Understand the importance of learning styles and adult learning principles in developing training; explain the purposes of orientation, development and training; identify on-the-job and off-the-job training strategies; identify key professional development tools; and, explain the four levels of evaluation
Module 6: Performance Management-Describe the performance evaluation process and systems; identify common evaluation errors; conduct effective disciplinary meetings; and, identify legal issues to consider during employee terminations
This 5-week course will take place from 9:00am-12:00pm (noon) at the Tyden Center in Hastings. Session dates are October 12, October 26, November 2, November 9, and November 16. Cost to attend is $750 for Chamber members and $1,000 for Prospective & Non-members. Cost includes all training materials and SHRM Certification upon completion, and covers all five sessions.
